Web hosting stores your site's files and serves them to browsers over HTTP. Email hosting runs the mail servers that send, receive, and store mail for your domain, routed by its MX records. That is the email hosting vs web hosting distinction in one line: same domain, different protocols, different servers, and separate bills that only look like one product when a host bundles them. You never need web hosting to have email on your domain; the two services are connected only through DNS. Splitting them is common practice and often the better setup.

What each service actually does

Your domain's DNS zone routes traffic by record type, and the two services live on different records:

  • Web hosting answers the A/AAAA record. A browser resolves yourdomain.com to a web server, which returns HTML, images, and application code.
  • Email hosting answers the MX record. A sending mail server looks up where to deliver mail for @yourdomain.com and hands the message to those servers.

Update the MX record and you have moved your email without touching your website; update the A record and the reverse holds. The DNS routing split is what makes mixing providers ordinary. Why people confuse them

Because shared web hosting plans have shipped a few free mailboxes for twenty years, newcomers reasonably assume email is a feature of web hosting rather than a separate discipline. The bundled mailbox and a dedicated email host behave differently where it counts:

Do you need web hosting for email?

No. Email hosting needs a domain with MX records pointing at a mail provider, and nothing else. Practical shapes:

  • Site on a host, mail on a specialist. A record to the web host, MX records to the email host. Your site can fall over without taking the inbox with it, which matters more than it sounds until the first outage.
  • No website at all. Plenty of domains exist for email only. You register the domain, point MX at an email host, and never buy web hosting.
  • Everything bundled. One invoice, one control panel. Reasonable for a low-volume personal domain; the trade-offs in the table above are the price.

When splitting is the right call

  • Deliverability is revenue. If invoices, support replies, and customer conversations ride on this mail, the shared-IP lottery of bundled email is a bad bet. Authentication records prove your mail is yours; the SPF, DKIM, and DMARC setup checklist shows what per-domain work is involved.
  • You run several domains. Bundled email means per-domain cPanel accounts at per-hosting-account prices. How to actually split them

  1. Sign up with the email host first. Create the mailboxes and aliases before changing any DNS, so mail has somewhere to land the moment records flip.
  2. Update MX records. Point them from the web host's mail servers to the new provider. Lower the TTL a day or two ahead if your DNS host allows it, so the cutover propagates fast.
  3. Set SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for the new provider. Remove the old host's SPF include only after it stops sending on your behalf. The free email checker verifies all of it on any domain, no login required.

Does web hosting include email hosting?

Often, at the basic level. Shared hosting plans typically bundle a handful of cPanel mailboxes. Bundled email tends to have smaller storage, weaker spam filtering, and shared sending IPs, which is why businesses with real mail volume commonly split the two services across providers.

Can I have email hosting without a website?

Yes. Register a domain, point its MX records at an email host, and create your mailboxes. Web hosting is never a prerequisite; the domain is the only shared dependency.

Is it better to have email and web hosting with the same company?
